Secret #7 - Student Life

Having a life outside of class will be an important part of your success in college. As a Big Ten university, Purdue offers many opportunities for you to balance academics with your social life. The more you get involved, the more you’ll feel at home in West Lafayette.

The Compliment Guys

things to do

Purdue students have no shortage of ways to relax and have fun. Here are a few activities to consider:

Join a student CLUB — This is one of the best ways to meet people at Purdue and develop a group of friends. You might get involved in a club related to your hobbies, interests, major, or something you’ve always wanted to try, such as skydiving or improvisational comedy.

PLAY SPORTS — Athletes have many outlets at Purdue. Recreational sports are fun and social, allowing anyone to play. Club sports allow students to play on teams that compete against other universities. Plus, Purdue has varsity teams that compete at the NCAA Division I level. Students interested in playing a Purdue varsity sport can visit www.purduesports.com/playforpurdue for more information.

Branch Out — With organizations such as the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band and the Latin & Ballroom Dance Club, you can nurture your artistic/musical talent.

Embrace Culture — Campus
cultural and artistic events appeal
to a variety of tastes and interests.
Recent performances include Lady Gaga,
Dierks Bentley, KiD CuDi, Kronos Quartet,
O.A.R., and Avenue Q.

Explore the area — Spend some free time venturing around campus and exploring the Lafayette–West Lafayette community. Find your favorite hangout in the Purdue Memorial Union. Try out the restaurants, theaters, and shops within walking/biking distance of Purdue, such as the local favorite sushi restaurant, Kokoro.

Unique to Purdue

Fountain runs — Running through
Purdue’s iconic fountains is such a
big tradition, it may as well be part of
the curriculum.

Slayter Hill — Sledding down Slayter
Hill on everything from lunch trays to
kayaks to furniture is a popular winter
pastime.

Triple XXX — Featured on the Food
Network show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,
this local diner is a favorite for breakfast,
burgers, and shakes.

Battle for the bucket — At the
annual Old Oaken Bucket game, students
tailgate, sing “Hail Purdue,” and cheer on
the football team against Big Ten rival
Indiana University.

GRAND PRIX — Known as “The Greatest
Spectacle in College Racing,” this annual
go-kart race raises money for student
scholarships.
